The Romanov sheep was originated in Russia in the 19th century, in the valley of the river Volga, in the Yaroslavl region and it was named after the Romanovo-Borisoglebsk district, around today's city of Tutaev. From the very beginning, a sharp selection of fertility was carried out, which is a consequence of this selection work that today in the world the Romanov sheep is convincingly the most prolific breed of sheep

The average fertility of these sheep is about 260% per lamb (while with excellent nutrition it is over 400%), which would mean that from 100 sheep from 260 to 400 lambs in one lamb. These sheep also have pronounced polycyclicism, which suggests that with proper diet, natural lambs can be achieved for only 6 months. In one year, from one sheep, when the lamb is obtained every 6 months, an average of 4-6 lambs is obtained, which is a number that no other race can give. In this way, from one throat we get 120-180 kg of lamb live measures, if we take that the average weight of lambs is 30kg, and such lambs are in our market most wanted. No amount of lamb meat on the sheep can be given by any other race for the same period of lamb nurturing. Also, this sheep is more modest in size (maximum 65kg while elite specimens of rams are 100 kg) and therefore consumes less food than sheep weighing 70 to 100kg.
The throats of these breeds are highly resistant, without any special nutritional requirements and accommodation, and can therefore be compared to our autochthonous pramenka sheep. Sheep are steamed after 30 days after lambing and are therefore unique in the world, while other races need at least 42 days. Romanov’s sheep have a quite shorter pregnancy of 138 to 143 days, and this all affects lambing for every 6 months in the sheep of this breed and their hybrids. The sheep of this race are very early maturing. Young throats are fully matured with 4-5 months. Female throats are released into the breast mainly with 7-8 months. So the first time lambs for a year and already in the first lamb, the average fertility about two lambs per sheep, unicode is rare, and triplets and quadruplets occur in elite throats that are well fed. The sheep of this breed are quite well expressed in the ability to produce milk of excellent quality. With an average production of 150-200 liters of milk in lactation, this sheep without any problems nurturing up its litter once and 5-6 lambs. This breed has a pronounced resistance to disease, so rarely there is inflammation of the udder in sheep, foot-and-mouth disease and almost no reindeer sheep, and also has modest housing requirements and is highly resistant to weather conditions. Roman Aries are known as the most active reefs with the strongest libido in the world. Throughout the year, they are fertile and can provide two laying cycles annually without any difficulty.

These sheep should be purchased from well-known breeders, in order to avoid the purchase of sheep that seem to resemble Romanov’s race, but their production characteristics differ.
